Proforca Theatre Company, & The Associate Artists of The Lion & Unicorn Theatre announce the return of Feel More to be performed in Feb 2020.

We are delighted to announce the return of our critically acclaimed production of "Feel More" for a brand new run of performances in February 2020 at the Lion & Unicorn Theatre. Casting for "Feel More" (Six stories from the world of Feel) is open NOW.

Proforça Theatre Company presents "Feel More” (2020), A evening of six new 12 minute pieces of writing from the universe of our main production of "Feel". Six new characters living their lives in the modern world we live in. Six new stories about searching for fulfilment, searching for love, searching to get lost and searching to be found again. Six out of 8.7 million. Because sometimes, to follow your heart you have to first bare your soul.

We are forming a company of actors to take part in our brand new performances of Feel More for 2020. Six actors will be chosen and paired with a writer to create six new standalone pieces which form part of the same universe and performed over four performances as part of the main performance run.

At Last (2019) Casting Announcement!

We are delighted to announce the cast for our September 2019 production of “At Last” with casting also announced for its prequel / spin-off from our expanded universe concept “At First”

We firstly welcome David Angland to Proforça Theatre Company in the role of “Alfie” David is a graduate of East 15 and has recently appeared in “Testament” (The Hope Theatre / Ed Fringe") and “Lord of The Flies” for Lazarus Theatre Company.

Michael Faulkner appears as “William”. Michael is a graduate of Central School of Speech and Drama and appeared recently in a new piece of work called “Did it Hurt?” at The King’s Head Theatre and “Ghost Fruit” at Camden People’s Theatre.

Returning to Proforca are some of our favourite and most accomplished performers in brand new roles written especially for this production:

Gemma Wray returns to the company as “Nikki”. Gemma’s previous credits for Proforca include the critically acclaimed “Karen” in “Feel” (2018) at the Lion & Unicorn Theatre, Hertford Theatre, Theatre N16 and the Albany Theatre, Coventry. Other credits include “2nd Coming Again” (EdFringe, Theatre N16 & The Lion & Unicorn Theatre) & “Asking for a Raise” (The Space)

Melissa Phillips is Grace. Melissa is a London based actor from New Zealand whose prior credits include “Jackie” in Feel More (2018) at the Lion & Unicorn Theatre, Theatre N16 and the “King’s Head Theatre” and “BU21” for KDC at the Baron’s Court Theatre as well as several short films.

Malcolm Jeffries is “John”, having previously performed as “Angelo” in Feel More (2018) at the Lion & Unicorn Theatre, King’s Head Theatre and Theatre N16 as well as “Guardian” in “Reading Gaol (2018)” for Proforca at Theatre N16. Malcolm has also worked prolifically as an actor for stage and TV in venues such as the Landor Theatre, White Bear Theatre, The Cockpit, New Wimbledon Studios as well as an established TV career.

Demelza O’Sullivan plays “Marie” and returns to Proforca having played “BrendafromUKiP” in Feel More (2019) at the Space Arts Centre. Demelza is a midlands based actor who has also performed in “Yen” (The Old Joint Stock and the Bunker Theatre) and “A Christmas Carol”

Anthony Fagan is “Colin” - Anthony is an actor and musician from London who’s prior credits include “Feel” (2019)” - The Space, The Lion & Unicorn, Upstairs at the Western, Leicester and the Albany Theatre, Coventry as well as “Glitter Punch” The Vaults Festival and Ed Fringe and numerous pantomimes in leading roles at the Elgiva Theatre, Chesham.

Rounding out our casting we are pleased to announce that Ciaran Lonsdale joins the world of “At Last” in a role to be named in “At First” - a prequel to the main story which will be performed before specific performances of the main production. Ciaran is a graduate of the Oxford School of Drama and has predominately performed in screen roles before making this return to the stage for “At First”

“At Last” tells the alternative history story of the fall of a far-right government in the UK. It runs for 11 performances from September 10th - 22nd 2019 and launches the Autumn / Winter Season 2019 at the Lion and Unicorn Theatre in Kentish Town. It is written by James Lewis and Alexander Knott and “At First” is written by Hannah Bates. Both pieces are directed by Proforca & Lion & Unicorn Artistic Director David Brady.

Lion & Unicorn Theatre to Launch March 12th 2019!

London’s Lion & Unicorn Theatre to relaunch under new management: David Brady, Artistic Director of fast rising Proforca Theatre Company.

Proforca Theatre Company, which has rapidly built a reputation with its touring Off West End productions including Reading Gaol and Feel, is taking over management of the Lion & Unicorn Theatre, the 60-seat black box studio based above the newly renovated Lion & Unicorn pub in Kentish Town, London.

Under Proforca, and its artistic director David Brady, the relaunched Lion & Unicorn Theatre will provide a home for the best, diverse pool of theatre making talent with exciting plans and favourable artist terms.

As part of its opening season, the new Lion & Unicorn officially launches with Proforca’s own critically acclaimed productions of James Lewis’ Feel and spin-off series of new monologues from six other writers Feel More, transferring to the theatre on 8th March following its recent run at The Space and a short regional tour.

Proforca Theatre Company to take over running of Lion & Unicorn Theatre

Proforca Theatre Company announces it is to take over the running of the Lion & Unicorn Theatre this Spring. Proforca will take over the running of the theatre in early March. The Lion & Unicorn Theatre is a 60-seat black box studio theatre based above the Lion & Unicorn pub at the heart of Kentish Town, with Camden Town just a stone’s throw away.

The reopened venue will provide a great home for the best in fringe theatre talent that London has to offer and Proforca are keen to provide a warm, nurturing and brilliant experience for both theatremakers and audiences alike. The new venue will be led by Artistic Director David Brady with a brand-new Artist Development programme lead by Theatre N16 founder Jamie Eastlake, who will support the theatre as an Executive Producer. In addition, the theatre will support new writing, as well as provide opportunities for associate artists and companies who will be announced shortly.

“The Lion & Unicorn Theatre is a mainstay of the London Fringe circuit, and has been a key part in our development as a company over the last 18 months. Proforca Blog - Ben Fensome

In the run up to our February 2019 productions of #ProforcaFeel and #FeelMore we threw open the doors of the Proforca Blog to our new collaborators, writers and Production Team. Taking over the blog for a look at crafting a “Feel More” monologue is the brilliant Ben Fensome who takes us behind the scenes of his piece “Luke” written by the very brilliant Jack Albert Cook.

We’re waist deep in the middle of rehearsals for “Feel More”. With just over two weeks to go I have to say that I’m having an incredible experience working on my character “Luke” with Jess Barton our director, and I’m really excited to get to perform and share my character’s “Tolkein-esque” roller-coaster quest from his duvet, to Charing Cross, Alexandra Palace and back again, all in the hope of remembering someone’s name…

 Luke is such a tonic of a character to play. Someone racked with self-doubt, self-conscious inhibitions and insecurities, with a whole host of experience in rejection, and yet, he still has an infectious optimism and bouncy energy that things just might- just might- work out this time. In such a disposable dating culture, an opportunity for a real connection feels like it’s more and more of an elusive goal and it’s no surprise that generally there is a huge amount of cynicism towards this tricky subject of “finding love”. This monologue, written by the very talented Jack Albert Cook, invites the audience to be hopeful that such a thing still exists as meeting someone “IRL” that you immediately and profoundly click with (even if you struggle to remember their name the day after…)

It’s rewarding to play someone who despite knowing his glass is half, or maybe even two thirds, empty, they invest a lot of energy in what is actually full. Whilst the piece is very funny and a wild journey into this character’s weird eventful night, there is a sadness and a vulnerability to him that I can’t help but get a bit moved by. What I love, and what I hope audiences will respond to most about the piece, is the chance this character is given, how hard he works to seize that chance, and… well I won’t spoil anything…

It’s worth mentioning too, there’s something refreshing about playing this kind of character in the context of a wider LGBTQ canon at this present time. Sometimes, we do just need to be reminded that it’s not all doom and gloom, and whilst it’s important to delve deep into the shadow side of our experience and psyche, it’s equally important to share the moments of joy, of liberation and (this word again) hopefulness.

I cannot wait to see what the other actors and writers of "Feel More" have been cooking up, and also intrigued to see how all these characters fit into the expanded universe of Proforca’s main production “Feel”, a play itself that also involves both laughter and melancholy in exploration of modern love-finding.

It’s going to be emotional!

10 Questions from Feel More - John Slade

In the run up to the launch of Feel and Feel More we’re spending some quality time with our brilliant cast and creative team. Next up we have the brilliant John Slade who tackles “10 Questions” so you can get to find out more about him and his character “Mark” in Feel More written by the fantastic Hannah Bates. Here’s what John had to say!

1. Introduce yourself and tell us a bit about you
   I’m John. I was born in East London, grew up in Essex, lived in Australia and am now based in London.

2. What’s the best piece of direction you’ve ever been given?
   Every line you say could be the last line of the scene. It’s just so happens that someone else says something else.

3. What actor do you most admire and why?
   I think Cate Blanchett is fantastic. She’s amazingly versatile and every interview I have seen her in she speaks with so much sense. I saw her play Blanche in ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ at Sydney Theatre Company and she was electric. Such an incredibly low, resonant voice as well.

4. What’s the best thing you’ve seen at the theatre and why?
   Cheek by Jowl’s ‘Tis Pity She’s A Whore’. I saw it in Sydney years ago and it was the first time I had seen a piece of classical theatre where the company had made the text so accessible. It was exhilarating to watch and I surprised myself by understanding every word spoken thanks to the great direction and acting.

5. Do you have any pre-show superstitions or rituals?
   I have to brush my teeth before a show. Taking that fresh energy on to the stage is so important. On the rare occasion I haven’t managed to brush my teeth pre-show, I really regret the last coffee I had. I fear I’ll have festy coffee breath, like an old science teacher at school and that’s not very appealing, especially for those on stage with you. 

6. What’s been the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you on stage?
   This wasn’t embarrassing for me as such but I had the job of undressing and redressing, on stage as part of an opening movement sequence, the actor who was playing King Edward II in Marlowe’s Edward II. One night, as I quickly yanked his trousers down, I looked up and suddenly noticed that I had also pulled his boxers down too. He was starkers, centre stage and standing on a chair, for the whole audience! He carried on like nothing had happened (obviously!), got into his new costume and thankfully thought it was hilarious. The audience certainly got some bang for their buck that night! Especially towards the end of the show when he had to be stripped down to his boxers again. Of course, he wasn’t wearing any so he had to do the last 15 minutes in his birthday suit. We had a school group in that night too! What a sport he was! 

7. If you could swap lives with anyone for the day who would it be and why?
   I’d love to experience life as a tribesman from an uncontacted tribe, deep in the rainforest or jungle. I think it would be life changing to experience life at such a pure level, with no technology or modern appliances etc. I wonder what level of connection these people have with the earth and nature and what us westerners could learn from that.

8. Who would play you in the film / play of your life?
   Evan Peters. He’s great in American Horror Story. Like Cate Blanchett, versatile. 

9. If you could change one thing about living in London, what would it be and why?
   Not just in London but UK wide, I would make it illegal for banks not to accept an ability to make your monthly rental payments as evidence that you can afford to pay a mortgage every month. Home ownership should be for everyone, not a lucky few.

10. What do you like most about the world of Feel / Feel More and why do think people should buy a ticket?
    I’m not much of a crier, but when I read ‘Feel’ for the first time, I was really moved. The play constantly moves in an unexpected direction too. It’s both riveting and relevant.

    BONUS BALL: Tell us something surprising about you that people might not know.
    When I was a kid, I went windsurfing with my cousins and got stuck in a bay with no wind. Lying on my board, trying to paddle back to the sport’s centre, a small boat pulled up alongside me and asked me if I needed any help. It was Griff Rhys Jones.

10 Questions from Feel More - Marcus Bernard

In the run up to the launch of Feel and Feel More we’re spending some quality time with our brilliant cast and creative team. We posed our fiendish 10 Questions Challenge to one of our super-talented “Feel More” writers Marcus Bernard, proving that sometimes, its the quiet ones you have to watch out for…

1. Describe yourself in Five Words
   Quiet. Observant. Intelligent. Activist. Mixed-Race.

2. Tell us a bit about your character
   When I write, I tend to be more interested in the impacts of events rather than the actual events themselves. I focus a lot on things like trauma and the long term implications of being involved in (or in the case of this character, witnessing) life altering events. I think that so much of writing focuses on horrific events, murders, rapes, snakes being released onto planes, but they never look at what it’s like to live with that after everyone goes home to their families. How those impacts hang around and haunt people for the rest of their lives.
   
   My character, Matt, works in a bar. Someone mentioned the idea of people watching, and I ran with it. I wanted to play with the idea of people watching as means to escape their own life, toying with a kinda creepy voyeurism but also a sense of duty to protect the vulnerable.
   
   I had a the Narrator from Fight Club and Trevor Reznik from The Machinist in mind when I first started playing with the idea but had to find a way to lighten it a little to fit with the Feel universe. I don’t really write “funny”, I tend to just write a character and if they happen to be funny then great. But it doesn’t always work out that way, so trying to lighten the character has been the trickiest part because instinctively I wanted to write a lot darker. I tend to write about heavy subjects because I find them fascinating and, because of the events of my own life, I relate to them.

3. What’s the best thing you’ve seen at the theatre and why?
   The Brothers Size is probably my favourite theatre experience. I’m a huge Tarell Alvin McCraney anyway, even in his work which isn’t quite at the same level, there’s just something in his words. Plus, it’s brilliant to see an openly gay black man writing about these issues and stories which don’t get told by the black community.
   
   And that’s part of what makes The Brothers Size so brilliant, the issues that it tackles from romantic feelings towards friends to toxic masculinity to duty and familial responsibility. But he writes with a pure lyricism. I’m not really the type of person that displays many emotions, I’m quite subdued and reserved, but it’s the only time I’ve been to the theatre where I actually cried as Ogun and Oshoosi danced together.

4. What three things would you take to a desert island with you?
   My vinyl collection, record player and speakers.

5. What are your 3 favourite songs and why?
   ”Everything In Its Right Place” by Radiohead. "When I was younger I used to suffer from insomnia, I used to play the Kid A album as a way to relax my mind. Eventually, as I got older, if I ever had problems sleeping, I would always slip Kid A on and drift off to sleep. Everything In Its Right Place is the first track on Kid A.
   
   ”Werewolves of London” by Warren Zevon. Zevon is one of the most criminally underrated rock musicians in history. His lyrics were just so weird and wonderful and witty. Werewolves of London was Zevon at his best.
   
   ”Hurricane” by Bob Dylan. It’s the entire story of Rubin “The Hurricane” Carter who was falsely imprisoned for a triple murder that he didn’t commit spending almost 20 years behind bars. Bob Dylan’s song is lyrical perfection, a beat-by-beat recapping of the entire history of what happened to Rubin Carter, the prejudices and racial motivations. It is, in my opinion, the definitive protest song, right up there with classic protest songs like Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In The Name, Grandmaster Flash’s The Message or Scott-Heron’s The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.

6. If you were president for the day what three laws would you enact?
   Assuming this is President of the United States, I would increase corporation tax, enact universal healthcare and ban the public sale and ownership of guns.

7. If you could swap lives with anyone for the day who would it be and why?
   My partner who is a Junior Doctor, currently she’s an Obstetrics and Gynaecology SHO. I’d swap with her for a day because growing up I wanted to be a doctor so I’d like to see what it’s like to be in that world and confirm that I didn’t make a huge mistake by not pursuing it. But also because she deserves a break and will get a day in my significantly easier life.

8. Who would play you in the film / play of your life?
   Richard Ayoade because, hair aside (the Indian part of my cancelled out the Jamaican when it comes to the curls), we look pretty similar and I’ve been told we have comparable mannerisms. I am significantly less talented, quite a bit shorter and, I suspect, nowhere near as hardworking as he is.

9. What do you like most about the world of Feel / Feel More and why do think people should buy a ticket?
   It’s truly universally relatable to its audiences. It requires no narrow lens of perspective to identify with seeing the same person on the train every day and wanting to chat to them.

10. Tell us something surprising about you that people might not know.
    I can hyperextend my fingers so that they bend backwards.

In the run up to the launch of Feel and Feel More we’re spending some quality time with our brilliant cast and creative team. We threw our ten challenging questions at Feel More writer Jack Albert Cook who brings us a bit closer to his piece “Luke” performed by Ben Fensome

1. Introduce yourself and tell us a bit about you.
   My name is Jack Albert Cook and I am one of the writers for Feel More! I’m a born a raised Geordie, but for some reason the accent has evaded me (most people think I’m Welsh). I have been writing for about 4 years now, having done a BA in Drama and a MA in Scriptwriting at Bath Spa. I moved to London just over a year ago and have had the best time so far!

2. How do you feel today?
   You know what, I thought I’d be hungover, but I actually fresh as a daisy. So I’m in a great mood!

3. Tell us a bit about your character in “Feel More”
   My character is a bit of weirdo, but weird people are the best. He’s warm, funny and emotional as heck. He’s bloody brave as well.

4. What’s the best thing you’ve seen at the theatre and why?
   Oh god…it is probably a toss-up between The Inheritance and Callisto: A Queer Epic. Both made me ugly cry, but in the best way. The Inheritance blew me away, especially the writing. I still don’t understand how Matthew Lopez wrote that. Callisto was so beautifully acted and captured so much emotion and heart in it. The last scene absolutely broke me and brought me back to life all at once.

5. If you could be any sort of biscuit what would it be?
   Ringtons Ginger Snap. Hands down.

6. What are your 3 favourite songs and why?

   “Pure Shores” by All Saints…epic ethereal gold.

   “All Fired Up” by Matt Corby…I want this to be my first dance song at my wedding to my non-existent partner.

   “How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful” by Florence and the Machine…blew my mind when I first heard it and it still has the same effect now (the brass section at the end is actual brilliance).

7. Do you have any pre-show superstitions or rituals?
   Because I’m a writer, the fear of seeing my work on stage for the first time is a lot, so a large glass of wine is probably my pre-show ritual.

8. What would the title of your autobiography be?

   Memoirs of a Gay-Sha: Jack Cook’s Journey, I’M STILL HERE.

9. What do you like most about the world of Feel / Feel More and why do think people should buy a ticket?

   It’s real, it’s everyone and there is something in it for every person who sees it to relate to. It’s shattering and funny and full to the brim with heart. I think it shows people that they’re not alone in a way too. It’s like watching the world being reflected back at you.

10. Tell us something surprising about you that people might not know.

    When I was 17, I came ridiculously close to legally putting ‘Gatsby’ in my name because I loved the book so much. Thank god I didn’t.

In the run up to the launch of Feel and Feel More we’re spending some time with our brilliant cast and creative team. Next up is the very talented Ben Fensome who chats to us about his role as “Luke” in Feel More in a great new piece written by Jack Albert Cook.

1. Describe yourself in Five Words
   I am tall and messy.

2. How do you feel today? ·      
   Good thanks! I’m very much looking forward to reading the monologue Jack Albert Cook is writing for me.

3. What actor do you most admire and why?
   Got to be Meryl. I wrote a whole blog once watching all her films and still not bored.

4. If you could play any role that you haven’t played so far, what would it be and why?
   I’d be positively terrible at it, but I’d love a crack at Coriolanus. Something about that hot-headed, hyper-masculine, proud, soldier thing that is completely alien to me I’d like to explore.

5. What’s the best thing about living in London?
   World class West End theatre, if that’s too expensive tonnes of excellent fringe theatre, if that’s too expensive, plenty of amazing free galleries/culture to take advantage of.

6. What scares and excites you most about acting?
   I’m mostly scared of not being able to (for whatever reason) tell a character’s story believably. Most excited by those rare transcendent moments where everything seems to align, and you really feel in sync with the character, the other performers and the audience.

7. What’s been the most challenging thing you’ve ever done on stage?
   I co-wrote a play with a friend from drama school in which we played a couple from the age of 21, every seven years (the title incidentally), up to when they are 86. Ageing a character through a very subtle physicality was a huge challenge and surprisingly was a lot more of an emotional process to both ourselves and the audience than we first realised, but it proved to be an extremely rewarding experience.

8. What’s your favourite line from any piece of theatre?
   It scares me how much I relate to: “I will do such things - what they are yet I know not - but they shall be the terrors of the earth!” from King Lear on a daily basis.

9. ·What do you like most about the world of Feel / Feel More and why do think people should buy a ticket?
   For Feel More I love the idea of taking little snapshots at a group of disparate people and what it will reveal about life in London at this fairly tumultuous time whilst also being funny.

10. Tell us something surprising about you that people might not know.

    A couple years ago I did my Grade 2 piano exam (alongside all the 7 year olds) and plan this year to do my Grade 3.

Next up is our brilliantly bubbly Kelly Gray who chats to us about Feel More and her brand new character (inspired by ABBA no less!) Elise - written by one of our brand new writers Paul Bradshaw!

1. Describe yourself in Five Words
   Positive, Persistent, Loud, Impatient & fun!

2. How do you feel today?
   Exhausted but excited!- i’m currently in panto with just 1 week to go and Santas coming!!

3. What actor do you most admire and why?
   The one actor that I’ve always looked up to and who was actually the reason I wanted to act is Goldie Hawn. I think she is amazing- hilarious, beautiful and talented. I also love how family orientated she seems to be.

4. If you could be any sort of biscuit what would it be?
   I would be a hobnob, because they are slightly old fashioned, a bit nutty, sweet, a sucker for coffee and people are always pleased to see them.

5. What three things would you take to a desert island with you?
   A big lilo, music and gin

6. What would the title of your autobiography be?
   “Following My Dreams (and other bad life choices)”

7. What’s been the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you on stage?
   I once had an incredibly quick change and when I ran on for my next number my dress was tucked in my knickers- I didn’t realise for the whole song!

8. What’s your favourite line from any piece of theatre?
   “Is like what Ginger Rogers said to Fred Astaire… Anything you can do, I can do better… and in heels!”~ La Cage Aux Folles.

9. What do you like most about the world of Feel / Feel More and why do think people should buy a ticket?
   I absolutely love the idea of Feel/Feel more, everyone has things going on in their lives but we don’t ever look at the stranger on the tube opposite and realise what struggles they are going through. If something terrible happens to us we automatically think the world has stopped but it hasn’t, people carry on with their lives and the earth carries on turning. Feel/Feel more really makes you think and for me any piece of theatre that is thought provoking is worth seeing.

10. Tell us something surprising about you that people might not know.
    I have the biggest phobia of Orca whales, its so bad I’ve never been able to watch “Free Willy” without shaking with fear!

Proforca Blog - Alex Knott, Writer - "Feel More"

In the run up to our February 2019 productions of #ProforcaFeel and #FeelMore we threw open the doors of the Proforca Blog to our new collaborators, writers and Production Team. Taking over the blog for a look at crafting a “Feel More” monologue is the brilliant Alex Knott!

It was the middle of last summer, at the height of the Edinburgh Fringe, when David first mentions Brenda to me. 

(Get me, sounds like I’m writing Breakfast at Tiffany’s).

Me, a little bleary eyed, more than a little exhausted and running on fumes, the manic flyering energy that most Fringe participants generate and the Underbelly gin. David, looking far more composed, with a cup of tea in front of him that I will later discover seems to materialise literally wherever he goes.

 David is explaining the idea behind the ‘Feel’ universe.  - “It’s like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but for theatre”.

This idea of an interconnected world, or maybe, better, one interconnected story, all branching off from James Lewis’ initial play, seems like it provides an almost endless supply of opportunities to the writers involved. The idea of the basis of the project being on a tube platform is immediately intriguing. 

This is a project about the way we live now, about our generation, about how Millennials fail to connect with one another. It is, certainly a play for now, and is added more irony and poignancy by the fact that ‘Feel’ is set in the run up to the EU referendum. Now, in the wake of that decision, and with so many of the most crucial decisions teetering on the edge, that play is going to feel like something of a harrowing warning. A warning that, possibly, we’re far too late to heed.

“There’s any number of strands in the play that writers could pick up on. Stories that could be told.”

Possibilities.

“There’s a woman at the station. She’s never seen, only mentioned. Brenda from UKIP.”

That’s the only mention of Brenda that day. For now. 

Jump forward to a morning in mid-November, on the first day of the projects. Both projects. This is where the teams behind ‘Feel’ and ‘Feel More’ (the series of stories from the world of Feel, all written by new playwrights) will meet and hear the play out loud for the first time. I mention to David that with our names laid out on cards, in front of our allocated chairs, it feels like we’re making Broadchurch. 

That’s not a bad shout, to be honest, as there is something televisual in the style, the energy of the play. It wouldn’t make a bad TV series. Or radio play. This is where the possibilities are endless. Stories could continue to populate this world. A whole world of disconnected Londoners. Born and bred Londoners, or those who simply find themselves in this city for better of worse. The opportunity to tell a thousand lonely stories. There isn’t a clear endpoint for a project like that.

By this point, David has asked me to pick up the story of the woman from UKIP. I didn’t want to write a monologue criticising the Leave campaign, or trying to get cheap laughs at UKIP’s expense. That would be the simplest option. Instead, I want to try and tell a story that makes you feel for Brenda. Maybe for just a handful of minutes, you can see her side.

“The most important thing is that the monologues are relatable, and that these are people we’d like to spend time with.”

David throws me a look.

“Except Brenda from UKIP.”

Challenge accepted, David. I think to myself.

Now a few weeks down the line, and some words have been written. They’ve yet to be edited, but the page isn’t blank any more. I’ve tried to give Brenda a voice that she’d be proud of.

I don’t believe that theatre is a soapbox; it isn’t there to shout politics at an audience through a loudhailer – so you’ll have to buy a ticket to see what a coconut shy and game show prizes might have to do with Brexit or UKIP. 

The words are going to be spoken by Demelza O’Sullivan. There’s a date in the diary. The show is going on. From that initial conversation in Edinburgh, the woman at the train station has some words to speak. Soon it’ll be out of my hands, and into Demelza’s, to discover if she has a voice.

Brenda lives! In the run up to the launch of Feel and Feel More we’re spending time with our brilliant cast and creative team. First up (and repping for the Midlands!) We have the brilliant Demelza O’Sullivan who features as “Brenda” in “Feel More” by the equally brilliant Alexander Knott. Find out about Demelza right here!

1. Describe yourself in Five Words
   Shy, strong-willed, clumsy, daft, generous…

2. How would those that know you best describe you?

   I actually think I’m quite an introvert but my friends always describe me as ‘bonkers’ (I can’t think why!) It’s probably because I’m always up for a laugh and will try pretty much anything once. I am also a risk taker and try to live by the motto ‘To live in fear is not to live at all’ as Corey Feldman once said in the classic 80’s film ‘License to Drive.’ I do have a problem with starting conversations with people I don’t know though as I am a bit socially awkward.

3. What actor do you most admire and why?

   I love Emma Thompson. Not only is she an amazing actress but I was also very lucky to meet her recently. She was so charming and friendly; she spoke to every single person in the room and made everyone feel really important. She’s also has the most amazing skin!

4. What’s the best thing you’ve seen at the theatre and why?

   I go to the theatre a lot but I recently saw ‘The Lieutenant of Inishmore’ by Martin McDonagh at the Noel Coward theatre and it was brilliant. It has been my favourite play since I read it at college and I’ve always wanted to see it on stage. It was the funniest thing I’ve seen in a very long time, so much funnier than when I read the script to myself as I can’t do the Irish accent. The acting from all of the actors was superb but it did have a very handsome actor in the lead role…

5. If you could play any theatre role yet you haven’t, what would it be and why?

   I love musicals; I grew up watching them because my mom was a big fan. I never really get to play happy, funny characters so I would love to play Dolly in ‘Hello Dolly.’ I’m not musical theatre trained so would probably get booed off the stage but the character of Dolly is just so scheming and hilarious. I love Barbara Streisand and the film version is one of my favourite films. I remember watching it over and over as a child. It’s the film that made me want to act. 

6. What scares and excites you most about acting?

   The most exciting thing about acting is the uncertainty of it all. You never know what role you are going to play next and it’s so much fun getting to meet new people all of the time. I love theatre because of the adrenalin rush you get before each performance – there’s nothing else like it. The scariest thing is also the uncertainty of it all! The continual search for work and not knowing whether you are going to be able to afford to pay the rent next month is difficult.

7. What’s been the most challenging thing you’ve done on stage?

   I recently played the character of ‘Maggie’ in Anna Jordan’s ‘Yen’ which was an amazing but challenging role to play. She is a diabetic, alcoholic mother who leaves her young sons on their own in a flat to fend for themselves. It was a physically and emotionally demanding role in which I had to swear a lot and also smoke for the first time ever. I learned a few new words! I also set fire to my eyelashes but I don’t really talk about that part…

8.  If you could swap lives with anyone for the day who would it be and why?

   I would like to swap lives for a day with Eleanor Tomlinson who plays the character of ‘Demelza’ in BBC’s Poldark. Obviously this is because my name is Demelza and not for any other reason, DEFINITELY not because Aidan Turner plays Ross Poldark…ahem…moving swiftly on!

9. What do you like most about the world of Feel / Feel More and why do think people should buy a ticket?

   I love how Feel / Feel More tell stories that are relevant to today’s society. Sometimes the themes are ones that we don’t often talk about, like loneliness or depression, but people are out there feeling these things and their stories need to be told. There are also heartwarming stories to be heard about love and happiness. I love how the writers create characters that the audience can relate to and empathise with. You really do find yourself getting drawn in to their worlds. There is something there for everyone and that’s what drew me to the project. If I wasn’t in it, I would definitely be watching it so get a ticket before they sell out!

10. Tell us something about you which people might not know…
    I am one of twelve children!

The Power of Eight! - Feel More (2019) Cast Announcement

We are delighted to announce the cast for the 2019 class of “Feel More” which returns to The Space, London in February 2019.

After an intensive audition process with over 1,000 applicants, we are delighted to welcome our brand new additions to “Team Feel” for 2019.

The Feel More cast for 2019 consists of Hannah Dale, Ben Fensome, Kelly Gray, Jacob Jackson, Callum Needham, Demelza O’Sullivan and John Slade. We’re also thrilled to welcome back Ross Kernahan to his (fourth!) role with the company. The cast will perform brand new and original pieces by Hannah Bates, Marcus Bernard, Paul Bradshaw, Fergus Church, Jack Albert Cook, Felicity Huxley-Miners and Alexander Knott, directed by Proforça Associate Director Jess Barton.

“Feel More” is our critically acclaimed spin off from “Feel” written by James Lewis and sees seven brand new stories performed from the world of the main production. All of the characters, themes and plot lines are a response to or drawn from the main show, meaning that audiences have an opportunity to experience a unique “expanded universe” of performance and storytelling.

Before Feel - London Casting - Arthur Velarde

We are delighted to announce the first of our casting announcements for “Before Feel” for it’s London Performances.

Arthur Velarde joins “Before Feel” in the role of “Alex”

Arthur is a London based actor from Stratford-upon-Avon. He has a BSc. (Hons.) Genetics degree from the University of Leeds. His most recent theatre credits include Paul in Brad Birch’s Black Mountain (OSO Arts Centre), Stephen in Vote Revolt and Player in Game of Chaos (Theatre N16), Fred in A Christmas Carol (The Albany Theatre), Jonathan Harker in Dracula (The Attic Theatre), John ‘Jack’ Worthing in The Importance of Being Earnest (UK Tour).

Film: Harry in Alright Harry? (nominated for best lo-budget film at LSFF), Phil in Nice Mike, Rick in Impact, Warren in Status.

Arthur played John ‘Jack’ Kipling in David Haig’s My Boy Jack audio-play as well as appearing in some commercials and tv episodes.

We are delighted to welcome Arthur to the role of “Alex” for “Before Feel’s” London run of performances. 

“Before Feel” is a Feel More story which takes place in the ten minutes immediately prior to “Feel”. At each of the venues it is performed it will be performed by a different actor and director which means a truly unique and crafted monologue for each of the audiences and venues at which it is performed. Before Feel - A Feel More Story

We’re so excited to unveil a brand new addition to the world of “Feel” for our Spring 2019 performances. “Before Feel” is a Feel More story which will premiere at selected performances at The Space Arts Centre and other locations across the run of the show and will precede performances of the main show on

“8.7 million people, all of us. Rushing through the same tunnels and sharing the same sky. 8.7 million people, and me…”

Life passes Alex by. Sitting on the same platform day after day. Counting the days, counting the minutes, counting the steps. Watching a world of people pass them by.

Waiting for a train that never comes.

But then was this one day, a Tuesday, when everything seemed to change. The day the train never came. The day Alex changed their mind.

Because nothing good ever happened on a Tuesday. Did it?

Feel (2019) - Cast Announcement

We are delighted to announce the cast for the 2019 iteration of “Feel” by James Lewis.

After an intensive audition process with over 1,000 applicants, we are delighted to welcome our brand new generation of “Team Feel” for 2019.

Gabrielle Nellis-Pain joins the cast as “Naomi”, Anthony Fagan is “Jamie”, Colin Hubbard is “Nick” and Emily Costello is “Karen”

“Feel” is a modern. millennial love story, which tells a funny, warm, relatable and emotionally real story about second hand love and searching for fulfilment. From a train platform in South London to a bedroom in Canary Wharf and back again, It is a critically acclaimed love letter to one of the greatest cities in the world and the never ending hope of becoming something better than you are.

“Just when we thought we couldn’t love the world of “Feel” any more than we do, we’ve had the opportunity to bring it back with a brand new cast and plans for some really exciting performances for 2019. Our chosen cast are properly brilliant, and I can’t wait to see what Gabrielle, Ant, Colin and Emily do to bring new dimensions to characters which we (and our audiences) have fallen in love with…”

“Feel” returns in February 2019 with a brand new run of performances at The Space Arts Centre on the Isle of Dogs, following performances in 2018 at the Lion & Unicorn Theatre, Hertford Theatre, The King’s Head Theatre, and the Albany Theatre, Coventry before heading out on tour in Spring 2019. “Feel” is written by James Lewis, directed by David Brady and produced in association with Eastlake Productions.
