An Earnest Q & A with Catrin Keeler

In the run up to our performances of "The Importance of Being Earnest" We sat down with some of our brilliant cast and crew. Next up is Proforca founding member Catrin Keeler, who's swapping her brassy Northern lasses and leopard print for something a little bit different. Kris Jenner better watch out! 

1) How would your friends introduce you? 
Probably as ‘this is Cat. She’s been on gameshows.’ 

2) Tell us a bit about your character and what you like most about them?
I like Lady Bracknell’s complete and utter interest in herself and the position she has clearly worked so hard to get to. She literally doesn’t acknowledge anyone else’s existence unless they can assist her with her standing in society, but woe betide anyone who threatens that - then she’s like a viper! The fact she admits herself she came from nothing makes it all the more glorious. I'm convinced she'd have been the Victorian equivalent of WAG, Trophy Wife or Kris Kardashian.......

3) What is it that you like most about Earnest and why do you think people should buy a ticket?
It’s a classic case of misunderstanding and crossed wires. And it will be interesting to see it completely stripped back and the focus being purely on the text and the rapport rather than big bustles and victorian frocks. 

4) If you could be in any theatre production, what would it be and why?
The Book Of Mormon. An impossibility without a few physiological changes I admit, but it’s so gloriously offensive and brilliant I would contemplate those changes if I stood half a chance...

5) What's been your favourite Proforça moment so far?
There have been a few which have given me belly laughs. [I won’t name and shame but cable tossing springs to mind ;)] The whole being part of a group that can both play hard and work hard is brilliant as it creates an outlet for creativity and fun outside of the normal working day. And meeting my real life love interest (who we're nicknaming Lord Bracknell now!) through the group. Yes, I’m being soppy - get over it Lady B!

6) If you could swap lives with one celebrity for the day who would it be and why?
Andi Peters. That bloke literally has the life of Riley. That’s not a job!! He’s flown all over the place just to cajole people into spending premium rate prices to win what is probably the equivalent of his yearly salary. And he gets to go everywhere on holiday for free. It’s a tough life Andi - Hats off to you lad!

7) What scares you and excites you most about acting?
What scares me the most is involuntarily vomiting all over myself when on stage. I used to have terrible stage fright and gave up acting for a long time because of that fear. That and/or my legs collapsing underneath, and me writhing and screaming for an ambulance. 

What excites me is being able to leave Catrin Keeler at the door and put on my new persona. It could never get boring.

8) What's the most challenging thing you've done on stage that you're most proud of?
I once played Pogo from Pond Life when I was in my early thirties. She was an 18 year old who had learning difficulties and it was an incredibly difficult scene where she can’t cope and has a breakdown. I was told after I’d made one of my hardened producer friends cry. Making people cry (for the right reasons) will always make me proud!

9) If you were president for a day, what three laws would you enact? 

• Nobody with a bodily function for a surname will ever be allowed a position of any remote power in any walk of life. Ever.

• Nobody should ever have to pay to pee in public toilets.

• 3 day weekends.

10) What three luxury items would you take to a desert island? 

• Marmite
• Soundtrack to the Book Of Mormon
• A dog.

James Baxter-Derrington

James recently graduated from the University of Warwick with a degree in History, during which time he also starred in various productions including ‘God of Carnage’ and ‘The Duchess of Malfi’. He is an associate member of Partners Rapt Theatre Company, performing as Brutus in ‘Julius Caesar’, Sir Toby Belch in ‘Twelfth Night’, and the titular role in Macbeth, amongst others.

He is the founding editor of The 730 Review, an online Arts magazine, which encompasses everything from Cinema and Music to Ballet, Galleries and Theatre, and all things in-between.

An Earnest Q & A with Emma Dodwell-Groves

In the run up to our performances of "The Importance of Being Earnest" We sat down with some of our brilliant cast and crew. First up is our amazing "Miss Prism" Emma Dodwell-Groves, who is swapping the plastic smuggling, space trucking, vixen-loving lifestyle of Frottage III for something a bit more civilised. (Well, we think she's civilised but judge for yourself!) 

1) Describe yourself in 5 words.

Quiet, subtle, mysterious, humble, boring. The complete opposite of all of those.

2) Describe your character in one sentence.

My perspective on Miss Prism is that she is a prudish know it all, with a not so deeply repressed romantic, even saucy streak.

3) What is it that you like most about Earnest and why do you think people should buy a ticket? 

Wilde's witty repartee. It flows perfectly off the page and you almost wish you and your friends spoke that way nowadays. You should buy a ticket because this production refreshingly shines the spotlight on the playwrights words without being bogged down by the 'period piece' aspects. 

4) What's your favourite piece of theatre and why?

Gosh. Um. That's hard. Can I pick two? I'd say 'The Last 5 Years' because it utterly destroys me. There is also something just incredible about the two simultaneous perspectives and how a solo can communicate a two person conversation without half the words. My other favourite is the Rocky Horror Picture Show, because I love a gender ambiguous, filthy, tongue-in-cheek romp. 

5) What's been your favourite Proforça moment so far?

Maybe when I had a gallon of glitter poured down my cleavage while having to act dead on stage. I don't know if dry glitter qualifies to use the unit of 'gallon', but I promise, when it's poured down your boobs, it feels like a liquid. (We commend the performance of the actress for her brilliant ability to "play dead" under very difficult circumstances.)

6) What's been the best piece of advice you've been given and why?

You do you, boo. 

7) Who would play you in a film of your life? 

Jennifer Lawrence. Because she's awesome. 

8) if you could time travel, where would you go and why? 

Wherever I went in history, I would prefer to be privileged. There's no point traveling back to medieval times and being a serf, or back to ancient china and being a 5th tier concubine. So as long as I get to be comfortably established, I would say perhaps Ancient Rome; decadent, artistic, academic and sexually liberated. 

9) if you were president for a day, what three laws would you enact?

1) More hugs
2) Free sanitary products and contraceptives
3) Basic tests on topic comprehension in all democratic votes

10) Tell us a piece of salacious and scandalous gossip worthy of Oscar Wilde himself! 

I have, on occasion, forgotten to wear undergarments. Mr. Worthing would not approve.

Proforça Blog - Going Wilde!

We're back! 

We're two years old this week. Can you believe it? It seems like a very long time ago that we at down and first started wondering whether we'd ever be able to get up and running, and here we are about to embark on shows three AND four. They're on their way! Thanks to everyone who has supported us; actors, production teams, audiences, family members, and friends alike. 

We're getting all fired up and ready for the next two shows in our catalogue, and we're giving it the full Oscar Wilde treatment this Autumn with our productions of "The Importance Of Being Earnest" this September and "The Ballad of Reading Gaol" in November. For the first time we are delighted to be performing both shows at the Lion and Unicorn Theatre in Kentish Town and we're looking forward to an intensive but fun rehearsal process. 

We've got some really exciting plans for both of these forthcoming productions, and we're really excited for you to see what we've got in store. We're keeping some surprises back. but you can expect a fresh twist on Earnest, putting Oscar Wilde's words back on stage and adding a stylistic modern twist we hope will blast a bit of fresh air into some brilliantly funny 120 year old material.  For Reading Gaol, we're adding some brand new material which we hope gives it a "Proforca" twist that responds to the original poem, tells some new stories and highlights the brilliance of the original text. We're also adding some great physical staging to the piece to bring it to life which we hope you will enjoy. (We're doing a LOT of walking in circles!) 

We have a great cast assembled for both shows, and we're almost following a "repertory" approach to both productions - with the actors for both shows appearing in each. We hope to establish just enough of a crossover between both shows and reward you for seeing both (you should buy tickets, if you haven't already!) I'm really looking forward to starting work on both pieces as we kick off rehearsals tomorrow, welcome back some brand new faces and some of our favourite returning actors. They've got a lot to do! Massive credit to Erin, Harriet and Cat too for being superstars during the pre-production process and I can't wait to see what they come with for their material for Reading Gaol. (as well as their acting performances for Earnest!) 

Speaking of keeping busy, August is always a brilliant time for theatre, and not just for those people lucky enough to go to Edinburgh fringe. London has it's own version of the fringe held in Camden and we've been lucky enough to see some great shows this year. from the provocatively titled "Grab 'em by the P*ssy" with our new Dr Chasuble Alasdair Melrose to something a bit more serious from our mates at Glass Half Full Theatre with "Monologues of a Tired Nurse" which has been doing the rounds with some really great feedback. In between, we've also been able to squeeze in the bloody, brilliant (and bloody brilliant) production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" at the Open Air Theatre at Regent's Park, as well as the bonkers but great musical 5,6,7,8 by Shaun Kitchener at Above the Gatehouse. (a musical with the song of Steps is pretty much going to win anyway, isn't it?) Exciting times indeed. 

One of the great things we're hoping to do with this project is focus on the cast and crew and their journeys through the productions - so look out for video blogs, photos, notes from the rehearsal rooms and special guest blogs as we go through the rehearsal and show process. Presenting - The Ballad of Reading Gaol!

"Some love too little, some too long,
Some sell, and others buy;
Some do the deed with many tears,

The Ballad of Reading Gaol was the poet and writer Oscar Wilde's final work. From celebrated playwright and society figure to a broken man dying in exile in Paris, the ballad of Reading Gaol is a heartrending exploration of the deprivation of liberty, a spectacular fall from grace and a soul searching quest to hold onto the shreds of humanity during one man's darkest hour. 

This adaptation of the Ballad of Reading Gaol mixes the power and grotesque beauty of Oscar Wilde's words with the anger, scandal and salacious gossip of his criminal trial to tell the story of the punishment and despair experienced by prisoners at the turn of the century.

Proforca Theatre Company presents a visceral new staging of Oscar Wilde's haunting and evocative piece which explores oppression, censorship, and conformity in and ever more conservative society with themes which are as relevant to us in our world today as they were over 100 years ago.

The exciting new staging of this piece of work is the perfect companion piece to our September production of "The Importance of Being Earnest", also being performed at the Lion and Unicorn Theatre and features Myles Delahunty, Piers Hunt, Ross Kernahan,  Graeme Thomas King and Alasdair Melrose.

Myles Delahunty is Lane

Myles is an actor and artist and is based in London. He has always held a deep love and admiration for theatre and film, and vivid interest for the art of acting, and the actors process.

Over the years Myles has acted in numerous theatre company plays in which i have attained large roles, i have also had formal training at Guildhall School of Music And Drama as a part of 'Junior Guildhall' and attended weekend classes at Sylvia Young Theatre School.

Previous roles have included Stanley Stubbers in "One Man, Two Guvnors", Major Despard in "Cards on the Table", Renton in "Trainspotting", Gregor Samsa in "Metamorphosis", Anton Schill in "The Visit" and Betty in "Cloud 9"

We're delighted to welcome Myles to this production and to the Proforca family. 

Alasdair Melrose is Dr. Chasuble

Alasdair trained at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, completing his Masters in Music Theatre in 2016. He has performed Florizel at the Minack Theatre in The Winter’s Tale and with Lazarus Theatre Company in The Beggar’s Opera. He has also played Fred Anderson at the LOST theatre in A Christmas Carol. Recent short films include Potty The Plant and The Last Man. Alasdair is a co-founder of Bigger Fish Theatre.

We've wanted to work with Alasdair for ages and we're delighted to welcome him to the cast of Earnest for a special guest appearance.

Emma Dodwell Groves is Miss Prism

Emma is an interculturalist and musical theatre lover originally from Hong Kong who moved to London in 2016. Having sunk her teeth into a range of amateur and semi-professional dramatics over the years, she has played Nancy in Oliver, the wardrobe in Beauty and the Beast, Chiffon in Little Shop of Horrors and has sung in a wide range of musical revues.

She’s also done her fair share of non musical amateur theatre, including Eliza in Pygmalion and Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dreams (with bits in Chinese!). 

For Proforca Theatre Company, Emma previously played the role of "Chesty Prospects" in "Saucy Jack & The Space Vixens" and we are delighted to welcome her back to the company (hopefully this time with a lot less plastic bubble wrap!)

Erin Olivia Read is Cecily Cardew

Erin moved to London to pursue a career in acting and to begin studying drama at Queen Mary University of London. Roles include the short films 'Unforgettable', 'Performance' and ‘Extra Time’ (2015) the latter of which has recently become an award winning film. 

Her passion for music, singing and dancing has led her to explore every part of the theatre.  In 2015, she was the Assistant Musical Director for ‘The King and I’ (The Riverhead Theatre) and ‘Oliver’ (The Embassy Theatre) and she assisted with the singing coaching and acted in productions of ‘Fame’ and ‘Footloose’ (2011 & 2012 respectively) at The Regent Theatre, Stoke-on-Trent.

For Proforca Theatre Company, Erin was Musical Director / Assistant Director for "Saucy Jack & The Space Vixens" (Nov 2016) and Producer for the workshop production of "Feel" (2017)

Harriet Lambert is Gwendolen Fairfax

Harriet is a performance artist, dancer and actress based in London. Originally training in Contemporary Dance, Harriet later completed a MA in Performance and Visual Practices at the University of Brighton. Her work has been performed throughout London, Brighton and Munich, most recently at Brighton Fringe 2015, with her own one woman show ‘CETBC’.

Harriet is a founding member of Proforca Theatre Company, and originated the role of "Camilla" in "If I Go"  (May 2016) and the role of "Naomi" in Proforca's workshop production of "Feel" (2017). Other Roles include Choreographer / Assistant Director for "Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens" (Nov 2016).

When she’s not writing/performing her own work, or performing in others’ work, she is also currently training part time as an Osteopath.

Catrin Keeler is Lady Bracknell

Originally from Wales, Catrin trained at The Academy Drama School London and has attended The Central School of Speech & Drama. Previous roles include Carol in Shakers, Justine Ross in Harper Regan, Pogo in Pond Life and has toured as Jack in a musical version of Jack and The Beanstalk. Catrin is an experienced voice over artist with a catalogue of work including continuity announcing, corporate and radio work as well as narration and voicing audio books. She has also had lead roles in various short films and corporate works as well as appearing on a number of reality and game shows. 

Cat is a founder member of Proforca Theatre Company and originated the role of "Becky" in "If I Go" (May 2016) and the role of "Karen" in our production of "Feel" which is being workshopped in 2017. Other roles include Producer and Costume Designer for "Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens" (Nov 2017)

Catrin’s dream role would be behind the bar in Coronation Street or in anything directed by Shane Meadows. (Even if it was an advert for toilet cleaner!) We're delighted to welcome Cat back to the stage as the formidable Lady Bracknell. Handbags at the ready!

Piers Hunt is Jack Worthing

Piers trained at RADA. Recent Credits include Pirandello’s ‘Naked’ at The Jack Studio, ‘I Went to a Fabulous Party’ at the Kings Head, Shaw’s ‘Misalliance’ at the Tabard, ‘Trapped’ at the Cockpit, and the award wining ‘The Tulip Tree’ at The Drayton Arms and Edinburgh Festival. He also played Ralph Fiennes’ Character in Secret Cinema’s production of ‘Grand Budapest Hotel’ as well as Lord Darlington in Lady Windermere's Fan at the Bridewell Theatre. He has featured in over 15 short films, as well as a feature film, ‘D is for Detroit’ which is scheduled for a 2017 release. Piers also provides the voiceover for an interactive exhibition at the Museum of London and his second short film as writer/director goes into production next month. His first short film was long listed for the Cannes Film Festival. 

This is Piers's first production for Proforca Theatre and we're delighted to welcome him to the company.

Ross Kernahan is Algernon Montcrieff

Ross is a London born and bred dramatist, actor, producer, sound designer and writer. He graduated in 2015 from the University of Sussex, after completing a foundation course in Music and Computer Science and went on to complete a BA in English Literature. At University Ross returned to performance and by the end of his degree had performed in several film/theatre/commercial productions, had devised, designed, wrote and directed several of his own productions and installations, performed at the Brighton and Edinburgh Fringe and become producer at the company Fight or Flight Productions where he remains today.

Having relocated to London the company's latest production, "Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons" has been very well received well in it's new home and opened to 5 star reviews at the Brighton Fringe. 

Having graduated Ross pursued acting full-time playing a variety of TV/Film and theatrical roles including: 
Theatre: Othello (Touring - UK); Boys (Stockwell PH); 
Film: Justice League, Hey Joe, The Loft. 
TV: Will, Life Outside the Frame, and various commercial work.

For Proforca Theatre Company, Ross played the role of "Sammy Sax" in "Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens" (November 2016) and we are delighted to welcome him to his second role with the company

New Opportunity - Assistant Director!

Proforça Theatre Company is a young, dynamic, non-professional not-for-profit theatre group based in London. We are passionate about creating pushing the boundaries for non-professional fringe theatre and create brand new productions which help establish our reputation for doing something new and different. Having produced a piece of new writing and a well-loved musical in 2016, we are now looking to produce our new work for 2017 and beyond.

We are looking to find a super organised and dedicated Assistant Director to join our Production Team for our forthcoming Summer / Autumn projects. This role will involve working closely with the Artistic Director and other members of the Team to help bring our shows to the stage and project manage all elements of bringing a show to life.

We're looking for someone to assist the Artistic Director with all aspects of our September production, a brand new and exciting staging of Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest”  – there’s a lot of opportunity to get involved in helping run rehearsals, interact with the cast as well as working closely with the backstage / production team. The production will receive its London performances at the well-respected “Lion and Unicorn Theatre” in Kentish Town and if successful, with the real potential to take the production to some other venues outside of London later in the year.

In addition, we will be producing some exciting new work during the last week of September. You will have the opportunity to help direct and realise some exciting pieces of new writing which will be filmed and presented on our YouTube channel as part of our digital offering. This is a really exciting opportunity to direct some work of your own and have this developed and presented for public performance.

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

• You’ll have a passion for fringe theatre and a desire to be involved in all aspects of the project management of putting a production together, (If you’ve done something similar for another amateur theatre company, even better!)
• Great vision for a piece of work and a willingness to try out new ideas.
• Empathy for and skilled at working with a wide range of actors.
• Coordinate different departments (Creative, Stage Management, Actors, Technical, Marketing, Set Design, Front of House etc.) in all production related activities
• Liaise with venues to ensure rehearsals are planned and performances coordinated.
• Great communication skills with different audiences / suppliers and venues etc.
• Patient, friendly, and with BAGS of energy and enthusiasm!

We have a variety of different life experiences and stories to tell within the group so we’re looking to meet a massive range of lively, fun and confident people who are dedicated and interested in being a part of telling brand new stories.

As a non-professional group, we all give our time for the love of creating brand new theatre, so all of our team are volunteers (we all have day jobs too!) – but we’re all finding that we’re gaining massive amounts of experience – so like the rest of us, bring the skills from your day job and come and have some fun with us in the theatre!

Dandy Algernon Montcrieff and his friend, the sensible Jack Worthing take on alternative personas in the pursuit of feisty society socialites Gwendolyn Fairfax and Cecily Cardew. But soon the two of them must face the consequences of their double lives as they encounter the formidable Lady Bracknell and a hilarious mystery involving a missing baby, a particularly revolting three volume novel and perhaps the world's most famous handbag...

Auditions - Upcoming Production

Role Requirement

Established just over a year, we are a young and dynamic non-professional theatre company looking for a male actor (playing age 25-32) who is interested in joining the company for an exciting staging of a classic Oscar Wilde production in September of this year. 

This is a main speaking part in the show, which will be performed in a new staging as a mixture of staged reading and performance. The other parts have been cast so this role will round out our team of actors for this production. The show will be performed at a central London fringe theatre with the potential to travel to fringe festivals and other venues later in the year. 

Limited auditions will take place soon, and more information will be given to actors who are shortlist. We are highly active on social media as well as with other companies and groups in London. 

Our previous work has included the show "If I Go" (written for us) and the fringe musical "Saucy Jack & the Space Vixens" - both of which were performed in 2016.

The successful applicant will have had fringe theatre experience and have great comic timing and delivery, as well as having the ability to deliver complex line delivery with ease. It's likely to be a great challenge for anyone who might be interested, as well as the opportunity to work with a brilliant production team and cast who really enjoy spending time together socially as well as enjoying a supportive network of friends and peers. A sense of humour is a must as the cast have all worked well together and have a good working relationship, and so you'll be joining a great group of friends as well as peers who work very well together.

Rehearsal / production dates

Rehearsals will be 2 - 3 weekends in the run up to the production. (16/17 23/24 September)
The production is planned to be 5 performances at the end of September.
